So you've bought your flight, paid your costume in full, and secured your accommodations. You're currently shelling out that carnival budget to get into your fetes of choice and now … now it's time to figure out what to wear.

Now let's just be realistic. Not everyone is a fashionista or obsessed with what's trending; in fact if you're headed to carnival your maximum outfit impact is measured by the amount of pictures you can get in pristine condition before liquor, perspiration and the elements combine.

Personal style can also be measured by how much you want to spend especially after having spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars for an unforgettable experience.

Then on the other hand, if you like dressing up and want your carnival pics “on fleek” then style is almost as a big deal as the price tag on that all-inclusive fete you've been eyeing.

Regardless of what side of the spectrum you're on; here are 7 essential fashionable and functional items you can't survive carnival without.

  1. Shades

The right eyewear can do two things: complete an outfit and protect our very precious eyes from the sun, dirt, paint, powder and all the elements. So you can look like a superstar while simultaneously protecting your vision responsibly.

2. Sneakers or Boots

Comfort is IMPORTANT around carnival time because by the time it's done--your feet will feel it the most. Flat shoes with support are necessary. If you're a little daring, try a wedge or stacked heel, but break those babies in before you go chipping down the road and suddenly can't feel your toes.

3. A bathing suit or two

Swimsuits are multipurpose around carnival time because anything can happen. They're (in most cases) comfortable, durable, recyclable and come in all sorts of styles, shapes, colors and prints. So, if you do get wet, dutty, or painted from head to toe--for the most part it's ok.

4. Shorts

Carnival time is typically held in a hot climate so minimal, breathable clothing is best. Shorts, for men and women can be a respite to beat the heat and create a cool, island vibe. Just don't forget the sunscreen for those bare legs/limbs.

5. Hat or HeadWrap

At some point during your carnival or feting experience, you will need to keep your head/hair covered. J'ouvert is the perfect example. The elements multiplied by your energy output after few hours of partying calls for hats and headwraps. This is only if you want to keep that hairdo intact or want to minimize the amount of shampooing you need to do before the next event.

6. Bag/BackPack

Before any fete or carnival, you will need to carry money, tickets, keys, phone, and camera--pockets only fit so much and as a part of the human species, regrettably we only have two hands. Cross body bags, pouches, wristlets, backpacks --anything  that you can carry comfortably is ideal especially with SECURE straps, zippers, and compartments.

7. Flag

When going to any cultural event; please don't forget to rep where you're from. Representation in any form is acceptable at carnival. Flags are the no-fuss go to ranging from bandana size to the gigantic ones you can wrap your whole body in. But if you want  an extra special touch; you can get your country customized and rep in your own unique way. Jewelry, t-shirts, and whole outfits will definitely let everyone know where you're from.
